Fruit and veg POS: weighed sales, waste and stock checks

What should a fruit and veg shop check before choosing a POS system?

SOLO POS covers counter products, stock and daily sales. For a fruit and veg shop, the buying decision also depends on how loose produce, pre-packed goods and stock loss are recorded. Establish the required weight-and-price workflow before choosing hardware; this guide does not assert integrated weighing-scale support.

A practical example

A basket contains apples sold by weight, potatoes sold in bags and herbs sold by bunch. The cashier needs a clear price for each line, while the owner needs understandable stock records. Unsold or damaged produce introduces a separate adjustment that should not be confused with a customer sale.

What matters most in this setup

  • Prove a weighed basket before committing to hardware.
  • Keep stock units consistent across purchases and sales.
  • Agree a practical process for damaged produce.

A useful demonstration, step by step

  1. Divide a sample product list into items sold by weight, package and unit. Record the intended stock unit and selling unit for each before the demonstration.
  2. For loose produce, specify how the measured weight reaches the till: an agreed manual process or a verified scale connection. Test a known quantity against the displayed price.
  3. Check decimal quantities, unit-price changes, rounding and any tare requirement with the vendor. Ask staff to explain exactly what they must enter during a busy sale.
  4. Demonstrate how corrections, damaged goods and replenishment affect stock. Agree who records losses and how the owner distinguishes those adjustments from sales.
  5. If using promotional screens, identify who updates advertised prices and when. Confirm the screen-content workflow separately from any proposed connection to product prices.

Check before you commit

  • Selling unit versus stock unit
  • Weighing process and decimal quantities
  • Unit-price accuracy and receipt clarity
  • Stock losses and adjustment responsibility
  • Verified scale and payment compatibility

General retail POS capability does not establish certified scales, barcode-label generation, tare handling or automatic waste recording. Ask for a demonstrated solution for each requirement; discuss separately scoped work with StartSimple if a gap remains.
